Transporting patients

Transports to Operating Theatre

If a patient supported on ECMO within the Alfred ICU is required to go to theatre at any stage, the treating ICU consultant or senior registrar should contact the perfusion service and give a detailed handover to the perfusionist prior to leaving the ICU and thus transfer responsibility for the ECMO circuit until the patient returns to Intensive Care. The Perfusionist will give a handover once they return the patient to Intensive Care using the COLD process (Connect, Observe, Listen and Delegate).

Other in-house transports will be facilitated by the bedside nurse, an ICU consultant and/or ICU fellow. For details and the process of transport see procedure section.
